Removal of the thermally induced surface zone. The silent danger in the edge zone – specifically eliminated. Conventional machining processes such as grinding, hard turning or fine turning produce what the eye cannot see but the component can feel: a thermally altered edge zone. This so-called “soft skin” is formed by localized heat in the contact zone between the workpiece and the tool – a zone full of internal stresses, microscopic cracks and reduced strength. It acts like a veil over the actual potential of your material – susceptible to abrasion, wear and pitting.
But there is a way back to the original strength: superfinishing, where the temperature in the effective zone remains low – almost imperceptibly so. Precision instead of heat.
