Brake discs absorb the majority of the heat generated through the friction process and release it into the environment, exposing them to the highest loads.

With Nagel, you can rely on solutions that not only offer perfect precision, but also meet the requirements of modern particulate matter regulations (e.g. part of the Euro 7 and China 7 standard). Our technologies reduce particulate emissions through optimized wear of the brake friction partners (disc and pad) and at the same time ensure that your brake discs offer a long service life, provide rust protection and hardly contaminate even brightly painted aluminium rims.

Particularly in vehicles with hybrid or fully electric drives, where recuperation converts a large proportion of the kinetic energy, our solutions provide the necessary balance between low particulate formation, susceptibility to rust and maximum performance. Technology

Precision begins in the micrometer range. Nagel took up the challenge early on to develop a technically reliable way to apply coating systems while ensuring maximum workpiece accuracy. The core technologies we use are high-speed laser metal deposition (LMD) with downstream, customized double-sided grinding. Control and monitoring technologies have been developed for both technologies, which can be easily integrated into your production, especially in conjunction with our process visualization tools. Our technologies make it possible, for example, to reduce the uniform thickness of the brake ring after coating to well below 6µm – a decisive factor for optimum performance and durability. With innovative processes, we achieve maximum precision even in the micrometer range and offer solutions that go far beyond standard requirements. Nagel – because true precision begins in every detail and must be controllable.

Everything from a single source, perfectly coordinated. Nagel offers you all relevant technologies from a single source: coating systems combined with double-sided grinding and related technologies such as in-house grinding tool production, automation, engineering and process monitoring. Of course, we offer thorough training supplemented by teleservice, on-site service, spare and wear parts storage, but also Flying Experts should you require more on-site support. Our systems are fully modular. This means that any system you create for prototyping can also be transferred to a production line at a later date without any further modifications.

Process

Process expertise at Nagel – bundled for your advantage. At our competence center in Nürtingen, we develop near-series processes for coated brake discs – efficient, precise and practical. Supported by state-of-the-art measuring technology, production-identical systems and multi-shift operation, we create process solutions that are precisely tailored to your requirements. For you, this means fast design, short development cycles and reliable prototype and pre-series production that sets standards for tomorrow today.

Our wealth of experience in 2025: over 30,000 prototypes manufactured from more than 200 different types of car and truck windshields and 50 delivered systems in use worldwide.

Coating

NaCoat – High-precision laser coating on a new level. The HS-LMD NaCoat laser coating machine stands for maximum efficiency and state-of-the-art technology in additive manufacturing. Equipped with an integrated TRUMPF laser system, it uses a top hat ring laser profile in combination with innovative bifocal technology – for particularly even energy distribution and optimum coating results. With a powder efficiency of up to 96%, the NaCoat is extremely resource-efficient and economical. A laser-off time of less than 3 seconds during the coating process ensures maximum productivity in the series process. The integrated in-process monitoring guarantees consistent process reliability and traceability in real time. Numerous diagnostic tools are already fully integrated so that analysis, control and documentation can be carried out directly during the coating process. The machine is prepared for both manual and automated loading and unloading – and can therefore be flexibly integrated into any production environment.

Cutting agent

Precision for maximum stock removal rates and durability. Our specially developed segment grinding wheels for coated brake discs consist of diamond or CBN grains in a metal-safe bond and are manufactured in the form of strips. These grinding wheels are mounted on quick-change carrier bodies and offer an exceptionally long service life despite the high removal rates on carbide surfaces. They are supplied as a pre-dressed set and are only automatically reset once in the machine after reloading. After that, no further dressing is required until the replacement!
